Entering the 2022-23 season, teams in the AFC East have accounted for 21 Super Bowl appearances, tied for the most of any division. They’ve also won nine Super Bowls, trailing only the NFC East with 13 in that regard.
With teams seemingly in the mix every season, the waters can be a bit murky, especially for new bettors, when it comes to betting on the AFC East. However, the betting landscape is far more navigable than it may seem.
Read along for the best advice to place bets and learn how to win at your local sportsbooks when betting on the AFC East division.
Different Types of AFC East Bets
There are plenty of different ways to make money on the AFC East, with many sportsbooks having a bunch of different types of bets to make.
You can bet on a team to win the division, win the AFC Championship or the Super Bowl. Along with those future bets, you can also bet on specific players and their stat totals in the 2022 season.
Win totals are a very common bet before the regular season starts. Oddsmakers predict what a good set number of wins would be for each team and many NFL fans like to put money on teams based on the feeling they have for that franchise going forward, after free agency and the draft.
AFC East Teams
Buffalo Bills
Since the division realignment in 2002, the Bills have only won the AFC East twice. However, those were both rather recent, with those wins coming in 2020 and 2021. Both of those years saw Buffalo eliminated by the Kansas City Chiefs in the postseason.
The Bills are the only AFC East team without a Super Bowl win to their credit, and they also hold the dubious distinction of being the only team to lose four consecutive Super Bowls. Buffalo made it to the Big Game each year from 1990-93 but lost to a team currently in the NFC East in each of those runs (the New York Giants in 1990, Washington in 1991, and the Dallas Cowboys in 1992 and 1993). As of the 2022 season, Buffalo is tied with the Minnesota Vikings for the most Super Bowl losses with four.
However, the future is bright for the Bills. Buffalo has a star quarterback in Josh Allen, a top-notch wide receiver in Stefon Diggs, and a stingy defense that can stifle opponents. Highmark Stadium (formerly Ralph Wilson Stadium) is the Bills’ home field, known for cold temps and swirling winds when the playoffs roll around, making Buffalo a betting favorite for most home playoff games.
Miami Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins are the only franchise in NFL history to have a team go undefeated throughout the regular season and win a championship. The 1972 Dolphins went 17-0 and won the Super Bowl, setting a bar every NFL team has tried to reach since.
Miami hasn’t produced an MVP candidate since Dan Marino won the award in 1984, but they’ve got a star in the making in Tua Tagovailoa, who was the fifth overall pick in the 2020 Draft. Tua is a left-handed quarterback, which presents some schematic challenges for opposing defenses. He’s also got two big-time receivers to throw to in Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.
The Dolphins have won just one division title since realignment, but they’re building into a formidable opponent and a true title contender.
New England Patriots
No team has seen greater success since the 2001 realignment than the New England Patriots. Nearly two decades of dominance have resulted from the duo of head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady. Entering the 2022-23 campaign, the Pats have won 16 of a possible 20 AFC East titles, more than any team in any other division.
New England is tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the most Super Bowl wins of any franchise with six. While most have included a flair for the dramatic, such as with Adam Vinatieri’s walk-off field goal in 2001 or Malcolm Butler’s game-winning interception in 2015, the most impressive may have been the 2017 game against the Atlanta Falcons.
Trailing 28-3 in the third quarter, the Patriots rallied on the back of another commanding performance from Brady, who threw for 466 yards and two touchdowns. New England tied the game at 28 with 56 seconds left, then marched down the field in overtime to win 34-28. This was the only Super Bowl decided in overtime and marks the largest come-from-behind margin in league history. Brady won his third Super Bowl MVP honor with the win.
Though Brady left the team in 2020, Belichick is still the head coach and is one of the best ever to put on a headset. As long as Belichick is around the team, the Patriots expect to be the benchmark of success.
New York Jets
The Jets have just one Super Bowl win in franchise history, Super Bowl III to be precise. But they certainly made that game one to remember.
Going against the heavily-favored Baltimore Colts, quarterback Joe Namath guaranteed a Jets victory. Against all odds and despite being 19.5-point underdogs, New York led for most of the game and held on for a 16-9 victory. Namath was named the game’s MVP for his performance.
Since then, the Jets have always been a thorn in the side of other NFC East teams, but they haven’t won the division since 2002. Perhaps with Zach Wilson, the second overall pick in the 2021 Draft, New York can find some momentum. Keep an eye on a few other young guns in wide receiver Garrett Wilson and Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner, both of whom were Top 10 Draft Picks in 2022 and will be key pieces for the Jets for years to come.
AFC East Betting Tips
Always do as much research as possible before making any NFL picks. AFC East picks are pretty tough to get a grasp of this season with how close every team is to each other. The talent level in the division is very impressive.
Every team in the AFC East plays in an open-roof stadium, so weather can often be a factor. The Jets also share a stadium with the New York Giants, so field conditions there can also be an issue, though it is quite rare for the Giants and Jets to both play at the Meadowlands on the same weekend unless they’re playing each other.
Make sure to always bet legally and make your picks at the best sportsbook for you, whether that is online or in person. Every major sportsbook has sign-up bonuses that can give you anything from free picks to risk-free bets.
Bet responsibly and intelligently.
